Not even the TV cameras could inspire England as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to host nation Turkey.

In atrocious weather conditions and in front of the Turkish TV cameras, England slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to the host nation.

With the incessant rain and strong wind rendering the pitch unplayable during the morning, the game was put back a few hours to allow the pitch the dry out. However, the heavens opened moments before kick-off making football difficult.

It got worse for the Three Lions when they fell behind in the first minute, a kick-in deflecting in off retreating goalkeeper Carl Richardson to put the Turks ahead.

England responded by dominating play with Micky Chambers starring with a skilful first half performance. Dave Gibson then hit the Turkish crossbar from a direct free-kick and Dave Tweed struck a post with a rasping shot.

The Three Lions must have realised it would not be their day when they struck the woodwork three times in a matter of seconds. First Tweed hit the upright, then Gibson blasted the follow-up against the bar before Lee Dobson cracked a shot against the same post with the goalkeeper beaten.

With the Turkish goal leading a charmed life and the hosts' keeper in fine form, England went into the break behind.

The visitors pushed on after the interval, letting fly with numerous shots and forcing a series of corners, but the equaliser just would not come. England even had a good shout for a penalty turned down.

With time petering out and England committed to a full out attack, the Turks countered to score their second and make the game safe.

England must now look to wins over Ghana, Liberia and France to book their place in the quarter-finals.
