England 1-1 Germany
Women's U23 International match
Wednesday 1 July 2009
Bisham Abbey
Fern Whelan looked to have given England a narrow victory over the might of German, but the visitors levelled the scores with just five minutes remaining.
Whelan had headed into the lead after just 15 minutes, but substitute Marie Pollmann grabbed an equaliser late in the game.
The game was played in sweltering conditions with the temperature reaching somewhere around 30 degrees.
Despite the heat England started the match at a high tempo and dominated early on. Fern Whelan’s headed goal from a corner after a quarter of an hour gave them a deserved lead.
England held the lead until half-time with relative ease as the Germans struggled to test their goal with any attempts of note. Indeed Carly Telford in goal barely had a save to make, with an easy catch from a long distance shot the closest Germany came.
The tempo dropped in the second half, with the heat taking its toll on the players. The play remained even for the majority of the second half, with England still looking comfortable.
A couple of half chances fell the way of the home side, but they were not taken and Germany capitalised on a late opportunity to level. Going into the final 15 minutes, Germany began to pile on the pressure which finally resulted in Pollmann notching the leveller late on.
England U23 face their next official test against USA on Tuesday 7 July.
