England miss out to Swiss

Switzerland 2-1 England

UEFA Women's U19 European Championship
Fifth Place Play-Off
Buk Stadium, Buk
27 July 2005

England lost 2-1 to Switzerland, who now qualify for next year's FIFA U20 Women's World Championship.

It was played in sweltering heat, with Vanessa Bürki scoring the winning goal in the 50th minute after Karen Carney had cancelled out Katrin Eggenberger's fine opening strike from range.

The opening exchanges were surprisingly lively given the temperature and Jill Scott headed a half-chance over from Carney's cross. Carney then failed to profit after Stenia Michel's weak punch had fallen to the feet of the England winger.

Isabelle Kaufmann responded by curling a lovely pass out wide to Simone Zahno who in turn picked out Bürki. The striker collected the ball with her back to goal, held off Katie Holtham and laid it back to Vanessa Bernauer to strike a low shot which Danielle Hill saw late but saved well.

The England goalkeeper was beaten just before the half-hour mark, however, as Eggenberger picked up the ball 30 metres out and curled a fine shot into the top of the net.

Carney almost won a penalty as she was felled on the edge of the area in 38th minute, and although that came to nothing the winger finally struck her first goal in Hungary soon after as she raced on to Stephanie Houghton's cross and beat Michel with a precise first-time shot.

Scott went close to giving England the lead, but managed to hit Michel with the last kick of the half after being found three metres from goal by Carney.

England paid the price in the 50th minute as Martina Moser first dispossessed Fern Whelan, and then beat Hill to the loose ball with the goalkeeper three metres outside her area.

The touch was enough to free Bürki who outpaced the England defence before gleefully rolling in her fifth goal of the tournament.

England dominated possession from then on, but only created one real chance which Katie Holtham hooked over.
