Brown still jumping

The past week has been a memorable one for the England squad, with qualification for the World Cup being the most valued memory for the players.

Reaching the finals for only the second time in the nation's history mean they will be forever remembered for the massive acheivement.

But day-to-day life and playing for their clubs has been on the agenda for the 20 players in the squad, and for Everton goalkeeper Rachel Brown it has not been easy to come down to earth.

But the Blues managed to seal their entry into the third round of The FA Premier League Cup on Sunday after beating Bristol Academy 2-0, both goals coming from striker Jody Handley.

But for England number one Brown, to get back to winning ways was pleasing and she hopes her side can continue this form in future matches.

“Our league form hasn’t been the best,” Rachel said. “We have been a bit disappointed with our previous performances. So it was good to come out here and win. Hopefully it’s the start of a good cup run. I feel we played a little bit better but we certainly know we have got more to come.”

Next up for the Toffee’s is a home fixture against Blackburn, and the last time the two sides met, the Merseysiders came through a tough match 2-0 winners.

“Hopefully, if we get a win against Blackburn, it will give us the chance to get a bit of momentum. As the next game after this fixture is against Arsenal, as we don’t have a game on Sunday. So it would be great to have a good win to prepare us for the big game against Arsenal. Although we certainly won’t be taking Blackburn lightly by any means.

“A lot of their players are fairly unknown, although there are a couple of players who are and have been in the England set up over the years. They are improving week in week out and they have a very strong set-up there. They will be a hard team to play against.

“Blackburn have come up this season and they have a lot to prove and to show that they are worthy of staying in the league. They are playing fairly well and we have got to be careful of them.”

The international efforts of both the England Senior and U19 players have given the club a massive lift. And it is something that Brown is thankful for.

“We were quite lucky that a number of us where on international duty over the past week. Whether it be the U19’s or the seniors, we have all had fantastic results and we have come back to Everton buoyed as a result.

“It shouldn’t need something like that to improve your league form but you cant help be a bit more confident after games with England. So hopefully this will be the start of a good run for us here.”

Being part of such a successful national team has its rewards when they qualify for the World Cup finals in China. But what about the after effects, as the players try to come back to the rigours of normal life.

“I have not really come down to earth just yet, I still have a sore throat and I’m still feeling a bit run down. But that was an unbelievable experience and it is something we have now got to put to the back of our minds. We have got to concentrate on what is ahead of us. But that feeling will stay with us forever.

“Obviously we all came back on the Sunday and most of us had work on the Monday. So we had to switch from being excited to getting back to the boring reality of work. Then we had training throughout the week as well. So we are all now fully focused on club form and we intend on getting ourselves back on track in the league.”

Rachel and Everton will get back on the league trail when they take on Blackburn Rovers at the Arriva Stadium, Marine FC, on Wednesday evening and kick off is at 7:30pm.
