Carney can't wait

Karen Carney believes that the joy of beating Russia on Friday will carry England into their final group match on a high.

Carney said: "It was a crazy match, but we got the three points in the end which is what we needed. Coming from 2-0 down in the European Championship to win 3-2 is pretty unheard of, so we showed great character to come back.

"I think it was a good game for the neutrals to watch, but we're just glad we won. It gives us a lot of confidence, especially after the disappointment we had against Italy.

"The last two games have been high energy encounters. Against Italy we were down to ten players, and a lot of players had to really dig deep and we were tired going into this one.

"Then going 2-0 down so early we knew we had to kick into gear otherwise we'd be going home. So after the game everyone was just so tired, but so relieved that we got the three points."

On Sweden, Carney said: "We'd all like to beat Sweden and finish top of the group if possible, to avoid Germany. Sweden are a great team and you can't take anything away from them, it will be an even bigger battle."

"As long as we get out of the group and into the semi-final I'll take whatever result gets us there."

"I remember 2005 very well and Sweden kind of killed us in that tournament. But we're in a different place now, we're a different squad with more experience. It might be a lot of the same players here now, but we're tougher mentally and I think we have the team to change it."
