Stuart Pearce has hinted that he won't be making any big changes to the system adopted by England's Under-21s in their unbeaten campaign so far as he prepares for his first game in charge.

Pearce, manager at Manchester City, was confirmed as the new Under-21s Coach last week, along with Assistant Coach Nigel Pearson, and took his first training session with the squad on Monday morning ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Spain at Derby County's Pride Park.

Though he won't be involved with the squad again until the end of the season, Pearce said he will be keeping an eye on the next friendly from afar as he aims to lead England to glory at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Holland this summer.

During a successful qualification campaign under previous Coach Peter Taylor, England played in a powerful attacking style with one man up front and pacy wingmen providing support in front of a three-man midfield.

That saw them score eight goals in four games on their way to a place in the Finals, and Pearce says he won't tinker too much.

"The squad and the ability within the squad lends itself to keeping on going the way they have been," he said. "It would be foolish of me to come in and try to drastically change things.

"They've got a successful formula that's working for them and a good spirit within the camp, so from my point of view it's a case of coming in and having a look round and approaching things in a quiet manner. I'll see what we've got and get to know one or two characters we have in the squad."

He added: "We've got three matches leading up to the tournament and I think what we'll do is have a look at all of the players, they'll all have some playing time between now and the summer.

"Hopefully they'll go into the tournament being comfortable with the experience of being around the Under-21 squad and we'll look to integrate the ones with little experience with those that have a lot of experience."
