James Milner says England's Under-21 squad will be determined not to suffer the disappointment of a second successive European Championship play-off defeat.

The Young Lions lost out 3-2 on aggregate to France last November at the final qualification hurdle for the previous tournament.

And they must now overcome Germany at the same stage in a two-legged encounter to decide who goes through to the Finals in Holland.

The first leg will be played at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena on Friday 6 October, with the second leg at the BayArena in Leverkusen on Tuesday 10 October.

And Milner, who scored the vital winning goal last time out against Switzerland to ensure Peter Taylor's side topped their mini-group, explained the heartache of the France defeat is likely to spur on the team.

"A lot of the boys who played against France are still involved in the squad and that defeat was not so long ago, so it is still fresh in our minds," the Newcastle midfielder said.

"We got so close last time and maybe you could say we went out to a debatable penalty. But I am sure we won't be thinking about that France game in this play-off situation.

"It's important that we get into the Finals and that's where we feel we should be playing.

"A lot of the lads know they won't be playing at this level again if we lose, so they don't want to bow out with that disappointment.

"In our last game against Switzerland we showed what type of team spirit we have by digging deep after we had let a two-goal lead slip.

"Hopefully that will also stand us in good stead for the play-offs. We know how important it is now because we missed out at the same stage last time."
