Carlton Cole's 18th minute header put Peter Taylor's men in front, but a Marc Janko brace handed Austria the victory.

England had already earned a place in the play-offs, but were hoping to top the group ahead of Germany. The defeat means England will finish second in Group Six and play the winner of another group over two legs next month.
