England Under-21 coach Peter Taylor is enjoying the benefits of having some emerging left-footed talent to bolster the country's European Championship qualifying campaign.
Taylor takes his team to play Poland on Tuesday night boosted by the impressive 2-0 win over Austria in Krems.
While striker Carlton Cole deservedly took most of the plaudits for his goalscoring performance, the duo of Leighton Baines and Stewart Downing did a good job on the left.
Much has been made of the lack of left-footed players in the English game, but Wigan's Baines and Middlesbrough's Downing are full of potential.
Taylor said: "It's nice to have two English players who are left-footed and are coming through the system.
"It was Baines' first game at left back for us against Austria and he did really well and never gave the ball away.
"The two of them gave us great balance on the left hand side and gave great shape to the team.
"Playing regularly at this level will help them improve and also help them progress at their clubs."
Taylor expects to welcome back David Bentley, who is on loan at Norwich from Arsenal this season, after injury for Tuesday's game.
Chelsea right back Glen Johnson also returns after suspension, but neither can be guaranteed a first team spot after the team's showing against Austria.
