If Rovers avoid relegation this season, then Stead's contribution will be seen as vital.

The England U-21 striker only joined the Premiership club in February, but he has already made a huge impact since his transfer from Huddersfield Town.

Stead was again impressive on Saturday as Rovers beat Leicester in a crucial relegation six-pointer. His performance followed on from last Monday, when he struck a 20-yard winner as Blackburn beat Fulham 4-3.

Stead, just turned 21, was first called up by his country to play against Holland in February, while he also came off the bench against Sweden last month.

More represenative honours for the 6ft 3in forward are a certainty if he carries on in this form.

We spoke to England Under-21 coach David Platt about the Huddersfield-born forward: "It's a big move-up from the Third Division to the Premier League and the fact that Jon has been able to bridge that gap so seamlessly speaks volumes for his ability and attitude. He's an impressive guy on and off the pitch."

Another young player to catch the eye this weekend was Marcus Tudgay. The Derby County striker, also 21, scored twice against Preston to follow-up his goal against local rivals Nottingham Forest in March.
