Wayne has played for England with distinction at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level and now, with an excellent start to the season and his first Premiership goal under his belt, Wayne will get the chance to show Platt what he can do at first hand.
As well as Rooney, there are four other newcomers to the squad - Boaz Myhill of Aston Villa, Frazer Richardson of Leeds United, Kevin Nolan of Bolton Wanderers, Darren Ambrose of Ipswich Town.

The focus will be on squad integration and forward-planning, and for Platt it comes at the perfect time, as he explained to TheFA.com.

The former England captain said: "Having the squad together for training is a major advantage in our preparations for our next games. It has also given me the opportunity of calling up many more players to have a closer look at without the distraction of having to prepare for a game.

"Youngsters such as Darren Ambrose of Ipswich and of course Wayne Rooney are playing as though they have international careers ahead of them and so this is an ideal time to bring them in to let them get a feel for what we are about."

England's qualifying campaign for the 2004 European Under-21 Championship got off to the perfect start, with convincing wins away to Slovakia (4-0) and at home to Macedonia (3-1) in mid-October.

A tough double-header awaits, with Portugal away on 28th March and Turkey at home on 1st April, but with the depth of quality available, England's Under-21s will fear no-one.
