Qualifying explained
The UEFA European Under-21 Championship has recently undergone a change with the final tournament being moved to odd years to avoid clashes with the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
As such, this qualifying campaign has been streamlined to find the seven qualifiers in time for next summer’s tournament in Holland, which kicks off on 11 June.
The qualifying has been arranged differently for this tournament only, due to time restrictions, and is played over three stages; a preliminary round, a group stage and play-off matches.
The preliminaries were contested on a two-legged knock-out basis by the lowest ranked teams according to UEFA's coefficient list to leave 42 countries to compete in the group stage.
Drawn into 14 groups of three, each team plays two games - one home and one away match - and the side finishing top going through to the play-offs.
The seven play-off matches will be played over two legs in October with the winner heading to Holland. The Championship will then be played every two years.
