The Young Lions drew 2-2 with Holland at Turf Moor on Sunday, and the West Brom midfielder, who began his career in East Lancashire, was proud to have given the chance to lead the side.

He said: "It was a nice surprise. I wasn't expecting it. The manager only told me yesterday because the lads decided that they wanted to know the team. He just pulled me to one side and told me I had the armband. It was a nice treat and hopefully I did my job well."

Chaplow was only playing in his fourth game of the season, having found first-team chances limited at the Hawthorns since his move from Burnley last year.

He continued: "It was nice to
come back and play for England here. The fans got behind us all, and I appreciate the great reception they gave me.

"
It was only my fourth game this season. I'm not yet fully-fit, so I was trying to keep my energy for the forward runs. I was happy with the way I performed and the team did well."

The young Lions battled back from a goal behind to take the lead in the match thanks to goals from Grant Leadbitter and Dexter Blackstock, but the Dutch scored a fortuitous equaliser eight minutes from time.

Chaplow added: "I thought in the first half we were a little off the pace, we gave them a lot of time
on the ball.

"
But in the second half we game out and took the game by the scruff of the neck, caused them problems and got to 2-1. The goalkeeping error was just unfortunate."
