New faces in the squad include Barnsley goalkeeper Scott Flinders and Colchester United right-back Greg Halford, both of whom have impressed with their respective League One sides.

Having broken into the first team at Oakwell, Flinders has impressed in the 11 matches he has played so far, whilst Halford has played 43 League matches as a regular part of the U's defence.

Explaining their call-ups, Taylor told TheFA.com: "They are two players who have had very good seasons.

"Scott broke into the team late in the season but has shown himself to be a very good 'keeper. Greg had had an excellent season at Colchester and is a handy player to have in the squad as he can play in a number of positions."

Crystal Palace midfielder Tom Soares has been in and out of the first team at Selhurst Park whilst David Nugent, who has helped fire Preston North End into the Championship Play-Off Final, gets his first England call-up at any level.

The squad includes four players who are playing in a team one year above their age group including Newcastle United duo James Milner and Steven Taylor, both of whom are regular starters for the England U21s and will bring some valuable experience in to the squad.

"The last time we were in the Toulon Tournament [in 2003] we didn't have the kind of squad we would have liked," Taylor said.

"You need to have your best players and this year we are hoping that we can do better than we did two years ago.

"James and Steven are two really good players and it is important for us to have them with us."

Wayne Routledge has also broken in to the Under-21 team in recent months and he along with Crystal Palace team-mate Soares are also playing a year above their age group.

After impressing on his first appearance for an England side at any level when he was in the Under-20s side that beat Russia in February, Manchester City's Bradley Wright-Phillips has also been included in the touring party.

Taylor continued: "The most important thing is that the players enjoy the tournament and learn from the experience that they will pick up from playing against different types of teams.

"I hope the players go out there and play well and learn so that next season, when many will be with the Under-21s, they are more developed players and can apply the knowledge they have gained."

England start their campaign against Tunisia on 02 June and then face further matches against the strong Portuguese on 04 June and South Korea two days later.
