Nigel Pearson celebrated his first game in charge of the England Under-20s with a victory at Huddersfield Town’s Galpharm Stadium.
Richard Chaplow was the match-winner after coming on as a substitute in the second-half, scoring the only goal of the game.
The Burnley midfielder’s strike gave England a deserved win after they created most of the chances and saw a first-half penalty go begging.
Following a slow start to the match, England won a penalty with their first meaningful attack in the 14th minute when Dwight Tiendalli was adjudged to have hauled down Ian Henderson. But Smyth’s low spot-kick went wide of Theo Brack’s left-hand post.
Henderson hit the woodwork two minutes later after meeting Wayne Routledge’s right-wing cross with a far post header.
The tricky Routledge then produced a darting run into the area, laying the ball off to Osei Sankofa, but Urby Emanuelson did well to whip the ball away from the Charlton defender’s toes.
Henderson again threatened to break the deadlock when Routledge put him through on goal with a neat flick, but his shot was turned off-target by Brack.
Holland enjoyed a good spell midway through the half with Christy Jamga and Emanuelson both putting low-range shots wide. Their first effort on target came from Karim el Ahmadi who fired straight at Luke Steele from distance.
Smyth atoned for his penalty miss when, with Steele stranded, he headed away Hedwiges Maduro’s goal bound shot.
Neil Kilkenny fired in a 25-yard shot towards the end of the half which was easily saved by Brack.
A free-kick from Routledge struck the defensive wall and Stacy Long shot wide after collecting the loose ball.
Chaplow scored the winner on the hour mark, just two minutes after coming on in place of Long. Chaplow evaded a challenge from Bas Smulders in a central position about 20 yards out and slotted the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the substitute keeper’s net.
Jamie Young, who replaced Steele in goal at the interval, saved a couple of efforts from Ryan Babel.
England went close to extending their lead when substitute Pat Collins headed just over from Gary Borrowdale’s free-kick.
That proved to be the final act as England held on to record a narrow victory.
