Republic of Ireland 0-2 England

International Friendly
09 September 2004
Cork City

Two moments of individual brilliance gave the England Under-19s victory in this keenly fought international friendly in Cork.

Chances were at a premium, but Martin Hunter's England side gained the advantage on 39 minutes.

James Morrison, continuing the form that earned him an FA Youth Cup winners' medal earlier this year with Middlesbrough, struck a powerful drive from 22 yards into the top right corner of the goal.

After the half-time interval the 3,500 strong crowd urged the Republic of Ireland on for an equaliser, but their hopes were eventually dashed with five minutes remaining.

A free-kick from 25 yards out was expertly despatched by Ryan Jarvis, curling the ball over the wall and under the bar to leave the 'keeper grasping at thin air.

The Under-19s now face the Czech Republic on 6 October at Carrow Road, and will be hoping for another positive result ahead of the Second Qualifying Round group stage of the Under-19 UEFA European Championships, which take place at the beginning of 2005.
