England's U19 team started their European Championship campaign with a well-deserved 2-0 win over Liechtenstein in Moscow on Saturday...
England started at full-pace putting early pressure on the Liechtenstein defence and not allowing the opposition out of their own half. Dick Bate's side created a number of half-chances but nothing that looked like providing the break they were looking for and as the first half progressed, Liechtenstein's defensive play began to frustrate.
England came out after the break in much the same way, and the opeing finally came on the 68th minute. After a foul on Cherno Samba inside the Liechtenstein box, captain Stacy Long stepped forward to take the kick. Though the man between the sticks made a great save to deny Long's first effort, the ball rebounded kindly back to the feet of the Charlton man who slid into the corner of the net.
England doubled their lead just two minutes later. Half-time substitute Lewis Guy carried the ball inthe the box with great purpose and found the goal just waiting to be hit before rolling neatly past the 'keeper for two-nil.
A good performance to start the campaign, the back-four were solid and England 'keeper Ross Turnball had very little to do in the game so did well on the few occasions the Liechtensteiners ventured into the English penalty area.
The U19s next match is on Monday 22nd September against Andorra. TheFA.com will bring you news of that result soon after the game...
