England v France
U18 International Friendly
Victoria Park, Hartlepool FC
7.30pm, Thursday 21 September 2006

Jamie Chandler has good reason to remember his 16th birthday – it was the day he made his England debut.

The Sunderland midfielder had been training at Lilleshall before being called up to the U16s squad for the annual Montiagu tournament.

Then, on 23 March, a date when he should have been opening presents and blowing out candles, Chandler was instead chosen to help snuff out Portugal in a game which finished 3-3.

“Pulling on the England shirt for the first time was excellent,” said the 17 year old, who should line-up against France at Hartlepool on Thursday night.

“It was what I always wanted to do. But to do it against a team like Portugal, on my birthday, was special,” he added.

Understandably, Chandler’s nerves were jangling that day and he still admits to a surge of adrenaline whenever he lines up for his country.

“I still get butterflies every time I pull on the shirt,” he said.

Chandler is predicting a tough test when the young Lions take on France, but he is counting on some vocal support from the terraces to help England through.

“My mum and dad will be there, and the rest of my family and friends. My dad goes to every game, home and away,” he said.

The 17 year old is also hoping the Hartlepool crowd can maintain the tradition of North East football fans and make some noise.

“The passion for football in the North East is unbelievable. I don’t think people know what it’s like unless they have been to St James’ Park, The Riverside or the Stadium of Light,” he added.

Tickets for the game are £3 for adults if booked in advance (£5 on the day of the match) while children (under-16) and OAPs are just £1.
