England Under-17 coach John Peacock faces Italy, Bulgaria and Russia.
Tuesday, 14 February 2006.
England’s brightest young stars will bid to reach the Under-17s European Championship when they host a four-team qualification tournament next month.
Barnsley, Huddersfield and Scunthorpe will host England’s matches with a variety of the nation’s most talented young players on display.
England will need to get the better of Italy, Russia and Bulgaria to qualify for the prestigious UEFA U17 European Championship for the fifth time in six seasons.
England Under-17s Coach John Peacock said: "It is not going to be easy to qualify from this group. We have come up against Italy a few times in recent years, with mixed results, but I'm hoping that with home advantage we can qualify.
"At this level the most important thing is the development of the players but when it comes to important qualifying matches, the result does become important.
"These will be exciting matches for football fans in Barnsley, Huddersfield and Scunthorpe. Playing in front of good crowds is a great boost for the players and we all want to qualify to give the players the experience of going to the Finals."
As one of Europe's top three ranked sides, England received a bye through to this stage of the competition. The winner of the qualifying group will take their place at the eight-team Finals which will be held in Luxembourg in May.
England’s first match will see them take on Italy at Huddersfield’s Galpharm Stadium on 28 March before facing Bulgaria at Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley FC, on 30 March. They end by taking on Russia at Scunthorpe United’s Glanford Park on 1 April.
Matches not involving England will be held at Worksop Town FC, South Leeds Stadium and Stocksbridge Park Steel FC.
Tickets for England’s matches at Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United go on sale on Wednesday 15 February, and on Friday 17 February for the Bulgaria match at Barnsley FC. Tickets for the non-England games will be on sale on the gate on the matchdays. Group and Charter Standard bookings can be made via booking forms in advance only.
