Daniel Welbeck and Victor Moses scored twice as England virtually assured themselves of a place in the last-16 following a 5-0 win over New Zealand.

England dominated from the first whistle and the result was never in doubt once Welbeck opened the scoring.

The Manchester United man finished with a brace, as did Moses, while Ashley Chambers put the icing on the cake three minutes from time as England scored five goals in a FIFA Finals for only the second time.

On another humid afternoon, although cooler than Saturday's meeting with Korea DPR, Head Coach John Peacock rang the changes for this must-win game for England.

Opting for pace, Peacock included Chambers, Welbeck and Tristan Plummer to augment the raw speed of Moses up front.

The New Zealanders' pre-match huddle finished with a group roar, but it was the young Lions who roared all afternoon.

They made a dream start by scoring after just two minutes. Crystal Palace striker Moses rolled his marked before playing in the onrushing Welbeck who timed his run to perfection before clinically slotting into the bottom corner.

New Zealand responded with a chance of their own when Jason Hicks' awkward shot was tipped over by Alex Smithies. But it was not long until England's lead was doubled.

James Reid triggered the move with a forceful run into the box but the finish was all about Moses. With his back to goal, Moses twisted away from his marker by rolling the ball under his studs - a move famed by Zinedine Zidane - before planting past the hapless Kiwi keeper Jacob Gleeson.

Suddenly England matching Brazil's 7-0 win three days earlier against the same opposition did not seem out of the question. Peacock's 11 year old daughter Danielle, sitting in the main stand, certainly thought so, leading the small contingent of Three Lions supporters with a chant of 'Come on England'.

Plymouth midfielder Dan Gosling almost made it three on 25 minutes with a firm header from Chambers' cross only for Gleeson to pull off a stunning save.

But there was nothing the poor stopper could do to prevent England going 3-0 up two minutes later, Welbeck cleverly deflecting Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi's low cross into the net.

England scored their fourth on the half hour when Plummer surged down the left before slipping the ball through to Moses who calmly rolled the ball under the sprawling Gleeson.

Krystian Pearce, so impressive since coming into the side at centre-half that his team-mates call him 'chief', should have made it a five-star half for England minutes before the break but he headed Michael Woods' free-kick over.

Welbeck spurned a wonderful opportunity to complete a World Cup hat-trick two minutes after the restart when he nodded another accurate Woods free-kick into the stand.

It was Plummer's turn to squander an equally glorious chance moments later. The all-action Ofori-Twumasi galloped down the line and crossed to the Bristol City winger at the back post but Plummer misjudged the flight of the ball allowing Gleeson to mop up.

England were completely dominating and Moses would have netted his third on the hour but for Gleeson who stayed big to narrow the angles after Welbeck had split the defence with a fine pass.

With England cruising, Peacock used the opportunity to bring on Gavin Hoyte, Tom Taiwo and Medy Elito meaning all the young Lions have experienced playing at this World Cup.

There was still time for a couple of close shaves with Geoffrey Macintyre volleying into the side-netting before play switched to the other end where Chambers, after a clever run, poked wide.

But there was no denying Chambers three minutes from the end. Blistering clear of the defence, he raced onto Taiwo's pass and drilled home past Gleeson to conclude a very satisfactory performance.
