England U16s have enjoyed a successful season thus far, winning the Victory Shield in December, before coming runners-up in the Montaigu Tournament that featured the likes of Italy, France and Germany.
While there is a rich history of competition between England and Spain, the last time the Three Lions faced the Spanish at U16 level was more than five years ago.
On that night at Feethams, home of Darlington, Spain featured a young Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique, while England called on Kerrea Gilbert and Mark Noble in the starting lineup.
With the Spanish undoubtedly Europe's strongest nation in youth football over the past decade, John McDermott's young side were prepared for a stringent test.
In the crowd were some of Europe's finest were a number of well known talent spotters, including Jim Ryan (Manchester United), Andy Ritchie (Leeds) Steve Clarke (Chelsea) and Jan Wouters (Glasgow Rangers).
Spain triumphed on the night with their solitary strike and they have yet to meet England in almost five years at U16 level until now.
This season England U17s and U19s have both faced Spain in UEFA friendly tournament matches. The U19s drew 1-1 in Austria in October while the U17s lost 3-2 in Belgium in October, despite goals from Chelsea's Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi and Arsenal's Henri Lansbury.
This year England played Spain at both Senior and Under-21 level in February, with Andres Iniesta dealing England a blow at Old Trafford a day after Stuart Pearce began his reign as Under-21 coach with and a 2-2 draw against Spain.
The last time the two nations met here at Wembley was during Euro 1996, a 0-0 draw that was memorable for its dramatic penalty shoot out that saw Stuart Pearce bury his World Cup 1990 demons, before David Seaman saved the decisive kick from Miguel Nadal to send England into a Semi-Final with Germany.
