The FA's Director of Football, Sir Trevor Brooking, said that he was encouraged by the performance of the England U16s at Scunthorpe on Friday evening as they overcame Scotland to clinch the Victory Shield.

After watching the Victory Shield decider at Glanford Park, Sir Trevor admitted that he was pleased with the patience and determination of Kenny Swain's side in coming from behind to win.

"It was nice to win the Victory Shield but the more important aspect was the performance which was very good," Sir Trevor told TheFA.com.

"At half time we were 1-0 down but with the way we were playing I was very happy. They remained very patient throughout, the Scottish 'keeper made some fine saves and I think our 'keeper just had one of those unfortunate things that can happen at any level.

"But they stuck at it, they passed the ball very well and there were some very good individual performances, and a good group of players who we can certainly keep our eye on."

A waterlogged pitch mean't that the game had to be moved from York to Scunthorpe, and Sir Trevor expressed both his gratitude to Scunthorpe for staging the game at short notice and also his sympathy for York whose surface suffered due to the severe weather.

"It's a shame for York because it was a sell-out and it would have been nice for the players to play in front of a full house. But the pitch was very boggy and heavy and at this age group it makes a big difference and you wouldn't have seen the performance that we have done tonight. So in that situation we are very thankful to Scunthorpe who have really helped us at short notice.

"I very much enjoyed it tonight. England v Scotland is always going to be robust and the visitors worked very hard, but we got the ball down and passed it, we were patient when it looked like the ball wouldn't go in.

"There were some good attacking players and the midfield were very creative. I think there are five or six players we can keep an eye on and with the strong group we have at U17s now, I must say I am quite encouraged."
