England ended their Montaigu Tournament campaign in fifth place with victory over Japan in the final game on Monday.
Kenny Swain's U16s side had finished third in the group stage following a 2-1 defeat to Tunisia on Saturday, which meant they would line-up against the Japanese.
A 1-1 draw in normal time thanks to a 74th minute strike from Arsenal youngster Rhys Murphy saw the match move to penalties.
Japan fired their first spot-kick over Alex Smithies' bar to give England the advantage. Well-taken efforts from Murphy, Jonathan Franks, Henri Lansbury, Steven Clancy then meant that Japan needed to score.
However, Smithies was equal to the strike and a 4-3 victory gave England something to celebrate as they headed back home.
