Carlos Tevez scored one of the goals of the tournament as he fired a brace to help Argentina cruise to a 3-1 win over Mexico and set up a quarter-final showdown against Germany.

Tevez stole all the headlines with his two goals and his second will live long in the memory of the Argentine forward.

The Manchester City striker picked up the ball 30-yards from goal and unleashed an unstoppable shot which sailed into the top corner.

Diego Maradona’s side look unstoppable at the moment and Mexico could not handle the skill and quality which the Argentine forwards have at their disposal. It could have been a different story after Mexico nearly opened the scoring after just ten minutes.

Carlos Salcido fired a long-range effort which caught out Argentina keeper Sergio Romero who did well to tip the ball onto the bar.

Only hours after England were robbed of a certain goal, calls for video technology were raised once again after Argentina opened the scoring in controversial circumstances on 25 minutes.

Lionel Messi flicked the ball towards goal and Tevez who was clearly standing in an offside position heads home from close-range.

Mexico launched a massive protest and referee Roberto Rosetti went to consult his assistant as replays of the goal were being shown on the big screen inside the stadium.

But it was to late for them to change their mind and the goal was awarded.

Mexico players were clearly affected by all the controversy and defender Ricardo Osorio made a crucial mistake on 32 minutes when he played the ball straight into the path of Gonzalo Higuain.

Higuain could not believe his luck and made the most of it when he took the ball around the Mexico keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.

Tevez put the game beyond Mexico in spectacular fashion when he netted his second of the game on 52 minutes after his 30-yard shot flew past Oscar Perez.

Mexico refused to lie down and pulled a consolation goal back on 71 minutes when Manchester United’s new signing Javier Hernandez got his name on the scoresheet.

But it was to be Argentina’s night and on the evidence of this display they will fancy their chances of going all the way in South Africa.
