Another product of the West Ham youth academy, and a former FA Youth Cup winner, Carrick is a classy, composed, ball-playing midfielder with an eye for the killer pass.

As a highly-rated teenager, he caught the eye of Sven-Goran Eriksson and made his debut for the senior team against Mexico in 2001.

Despite 18 months blighted by injury, Carrick earned a big money move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2004 and has re-established himself in at Premiership level over the past year.

His performances led to an England call-up for England's tour of the USA in May 2005 where he made his first senior start.

After another solid season for Spurs, Sven called on Michael to start the friendly international against Uruguay. His stylish contribution impressed many and might have earned him a seat on the plane to Germany.
