An accomplished central defender with a gift for reading the game, Wes was in fine form as he returned to the England starting line-up for this February's friendly with Holland. The Manchester-born defender's career breakthrough came during the 1998-99 season as he first gained a regular place in Alex Ferguson's defence and then made his full England debut against Hungary in Budapest. Major injuries hampered his growth at both domestic and international levels, but the former student at The FA National School returned to the squad for England's 2002 World Cup Finals campaign. Further injuries blighted his career, but the man once described by Ferguson as 'without question the best natural defender this club has had for years,' is looking to cement his position in Sven's squad.
