Having made his Spurs debut at 18, Ledley became a first-team regular in the 2000-01 season under the tutelage of first George Graham and then Glenn Hoddle. He was tipped for the top by the former England manager, and duly won his first full England cap in 2002 against Italy.
He subbed in that match but was given his first England start by Sven early in 2004. Ledley excelled in the heart of England’s defence, scored his first international goal and was subsequently called up to the Euro 2004 squad. There he started England's opening match of the tournament against France, and was highly commended for his performance.
More recently, Ledley has slotted in to England's midfield, showing the touch and physical strength that mark him out as one of the best of his generation. |
