A member of englandfans, the official England supporters club, Davies simply loves watching football, both at the Emirates and following England at home and abroad.

He's seen England in action all over the place; France in 1998, Euro 2000 in Belgium and Holland, Portugal at Euro 2004 and the World Cup in Germany two years ago.

Now, as England prepare to embark on another World Cup qualifying campaign under Capello, he's eyeing a possible trip to either Andorra or Croatia in September. But his hope is that he can finally see The Three Lions lift some silverware.

"We've had a lot of disappointments, but Croatia in 2004 was a fantastic game, one of my favourites, as was the Portugal game, even though we lost on penalties.

"I still don’t know why Sol Campbell’s goal was disallowed. I was right behind the goal and I remember the ball hitting the bar, I could actually hear it hitting the bar, and I thought ‘if this falls to one of ours it’s a goal’.

"It went to Campbell he put it away and we all started celebrating, then the ref gave a foul."

The Arsenal season ticket holder has been following his country since the World Cup in 1998: "I went to France and saw the group games and that was a really great experience, but I had my wallet nicked in Paris and had no money and no credit cards so I couldn’t go to St Etienne."

He continued: "I went to Andorra last year. It was in Barcelona, of course, and it was awful weather. I remember a League Cup tie at Barnsley a few years ago and it was raining so much, the fans were shouting stuff like ‘bring the sub on’ and ‘kick it up the shallow end’ all that sort of stuff.

"It was torrential rain, very similar to that night in Andorra. Steven Gerrard’s performance was the only thing that brightened it up. It was spring time as well, you kind of expect here, but in Barcelona?"

Euro 2000 also allowed Davies, who appears in the soon-to-be released kids movie Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, with one of his best experiences at an England match, as The Three Lions overcame Germany 1-0 in Charleroi.

"I remember the whole stand jumping up and down and you could see the building vibrating. We were in the top tier, it was so steep, and you could see the water cannon parked up outside.

"In the same tournament, we also had the euphoria of going two up against Portugal, through Scholes and McManaman, but they came back to win 3-2. Figo scored from about forty yards, and from where I was sitting it looked like a toe-punt, it went so fast."

But despite the previous tournament defeats, the QI star is hopeful that under Capello England can achieve the success that he and every England fan would want.

"I went to the Switzerland game in February and England looked composed, and there was certainly something Italian about their approach, nothing really gung-ho.

"They kept possession and looked organised. There’s no doubt he knows how to send a team out."

He added: "As an Arsenal fan I saw us win the League at Old Trafford and at White Hart Lane, so a day like that for England, winning a Championship or a World Cup would be great."

England will play Andorra in their first away qualifier of the 2010 World Cup campaign on Saturday 6 September 2008 at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.
