The last time Steven Taylor kicked a ball in anger for England, he stroked home the Under-21s tenth penalty in the 13-12 shoot-out defeat to Holland in June.
Taylor picked up an ankle injury in the closing stages of normal time, which allowed Holland to equalise and take the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Semi-Final to penalties, and it's not the first time the Newcastle United defender has had his dreams dashed at that stage.
While with England U17s five years ago he missed out on penalties in the UEFA Championship Semis to host Portugal on penalties, but is determined to finally get his hands on a major trophy.
"It was a kick in the teeth. But you're playing against top quality players and there was a difference to playing Premiership football and I thoroughly enjoyed it," said Taylor.
"It's always that last hurdle for me, the Semi-Final I just can't get past, in Portugal now the one in Holland. One day I'll get that chance to lift the cup."
Taylor was called up to Stuart Pearce's first squad of the new season on Thursday, and was expecting to be part of their side that took on Romania in Bristol on Tuesday.
However, he was promoted to Steve McClaren's senior squad a day later, something he couldn't believe, and he's enjoying his opportunity among the countries elite.
"I had to ring Michelle up at The FA to make sure there wasn't a fault in the letter," he said.
"To look around and see the players that, when I was young, I watched on TV and to get to play with them is just an unbelievable feeling.
"It's absolutely amazing just to be involved, but for the gaffer to have that confidence and for me to get that experience under my belt is the best thing that could ever happen for me.
"But I'm taking one step at a time. The 21s is a massive thing for me, but this has just taken it to a whole new level. But I'll see how things go and I'll take it one step at a time."
