John Terry says Fabio Capello's decision to hand him the captaincy gave him just the boost he was looking for after leading England to a comfortable victory over the USA at Wembley.
The Chelsea defender, who suffered Champions League heartbreak last Wednesday, opened the scoring for England just before half-time with a stunning header from David Beckham's free-kick.
And after seeing Steven Gerrard finish off a slick move after the break, Terry was left thrilled with his evening's work at the end of a very difficult week.
"The manager gave me a massive boost in
the week by giving me the armband and so I think I repaid him with my performance and my goal,"
said the skipper.
"If I'm honest, England was the last place that I wanted to come and see the Manchester United players and everybody, but it's done me the world of good.
"It's been good getting back into the football routine, getting into training and being back out there on the pitch.
"And I think that was shown in my performance which I thought was very good."
