Joe Cole believes England will only get stronger under the leadership of Fabio Capello and feels there is plenty to build on following their  2-1 victory over Switzerland at Wembley.

Cole played his part in helping the Three Lions get off to the perfect start in Capello’s first game in charge and is hopeful this is the start of a new era for the national side.

Capello made nine changes to the team which lost against Croatia back in November, but the players responded in superb fashion and quickly adapted to his new style of play.

Cole admits he was happy with his own contribution and feels the team deserved to come away with a victory in front of a sell-out crowd at Wembley.

“It was nice to go out and get a win under our belt," he said.

"It is something to build on and there were some good performances. We took everything on board and were happy with the work we have put in.

“We crammed a lot of work in during the three days and maybe in the last ten minutes we looked a bit tired. But we got the job done.

“We have worked really hard. Any new manager who comes in wants to get their ideas across and we are trying to get the right way of playing.

“He speaks great English and we fully understood our jobs. We can only get stronger and that is the important thing, so it was nice to get a win at Wembley after the last game.

“I am happy with my form at the moment and am still looking to improve. It was nice to be given the nod in the first game. I want to keep performing well for Chelsea and be there again against France.”
