Fabio Capello gives his view ahead of the UEFA Champions League Second Round
Capello's European verdictSunday, 02 March 2008.
With four English sides bidding for a place in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League, and three teams competing in the latter stages of the UEFA Cup, Fabio Capello has given his verdict on the upcoming games.
One of Capello's former clubs, AC Milan, host Arsenal at the San Siro on Tuesday and Capello believes it will be an interesting contest between two contrasting outfits.
"I think this will be a very good game because at this moment AC Milan are not quite the AC Milan the world knows," Capello explained.
"It will be very important for Arsenal not to concede in the first half hour. Milan are one of the teams who can play these games like they play their normal game. They are used to playing games like this, while the younger players at Arsenal are not so familiar with it.
"It’s not a bad position for Arsenal to be in though, because I think they will have the chance to score a goal at the San Siro. I think they have to try and play their normal game and play with confidence. This is very important.
"At this time Pato and Kaka will be the two most dangerous players for Milan. They are very quick and technically very good. They both also have strong long-range shooting ability.
"To win this competition you need young and energetic players as Arsenal have, but it is also good to have players with experience."
Also competing on Tuesday evening are Manchester United, who earned a scoring draw in Lyon a fortnight ago thanks to a late strike from Carlos Tevez.
Capello believes that United have the attributes to suit this type of match, and draws on last season's clash with Roma as a prime example of the Old Trafford side counter-attacking at their peak.
Capello admitted: "This is a very interesting game and I don’t think it will be easy. But it was good for Manchester United to get the away goal in Lyon. Lyon have to score at Old Trafford, as at this moment they are going out of the competition. I think they need to get a goal quickly in the game, but if they come to attack Manchester United, it will present a problem.
"Everyone knows if Manchester United find the space on the counter-attack, they will be dangerous and for them it could be a good game.
"I remember Manchester United v Roma last season when Roma attacked while Manchester United went forward on the counter-attack. We all saw what happened then.
"I think Lyon will risk something to recover the result, but it is very dangerous. At Old Trafford, if you consider the players Manchester United have and the form they are in they will definitely look to exploit any gaps Lyon leave at the back. Manchester have so many fast attacking players that they are a threat to any team.
"There is no doubt that if Manchester United play to their strengths in this competition, they can achieve success."
Avram Grant's Chelsea will be looking to maintain their progress in Europe after losing the League Cup Final to Tottenham Hotspur last week, and Capello is sure that will provide an extra motivation.
"After losing in the Carling Cup Final, I’m sure Chelsea will be determined to beat Olympiakos.
"I expect this game will be very different to the first leg and it will be extremely difficult for Olympiakos to get a result. I don’t think Chelsea have any injury concerns with their squad and they are all sure to be ready for this game.
"John Terry and Frank Lampard are both very important players for Chelsea. They are two symbols of this team and leaders on the pitch. It’s also good for Chelsea that they now have Drogba and Essien back after the African Cup of Nations."
With Arsenal visiting the San Siro this week, Liverpool have an extra week to prepare for their visit to Milan as they take a two-goal advantage ahead of their second round clash with Inter.
"This will not be easy for Liverpool. The Inter supporters will make a lot of noise to help their team, in the same way the Liverpool generated a brilliant atmosphere at Anfield," Capello admitted.
"Inter have to attack, they need to score three goals and the 90 minutes will pass very quickly. And they must be aware of Liverpool on the counter-attack with Torres, too. In that respect Liverpool will be in a very similar situation to Manchester United.
"The problem for Inter Milan is that they have defenders missing through injury and suspension, which will make it more difficult for them.
"For the first 25 minutes of the first game, Liverpool played well but the moment Materazzi was sent off was the real turning point and it was not the same game after that. To play with ten men at Anfield is very hard. It was an excellent result for Liverpool, but they still have a job to do in the second game."
Three teams are involved in the UEFA Cup, with Tottenham, Everton and Bolton all facing tough clashes against sides with real European pedigree - but Capello believes they all have a chance of being successful.
"Tottenham will be very confident at the minute, so they will be hard to beat. The mind is very important in sport and if you are confident you can find that extra bit of energy to recover in certain situations," Capello revealed.
"I’ve seen Tottenham play quite a few times and they are getting better step by step and have been improving. Tottenham are now playing with confidence, their form is good, but it is a long way before the end of the season.
"Everton are a good team and it will be an interesting game against Fiorentina. Fiorentina have an injury to one of their best players, Adrian Mutu, and he is very important for them.
"Everton are a very well organised team and the players stay in good positions on the pitch, so I think they will be dangerous opponents for Fiorentina right now.
"While Sporting Lisbon have considerable European experience, Bolton have performed very well in the UEFA Cup. They have already had excellent performances, particularly against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, and have probably surprised quite a few people along the way.
"It will be tough for Bolton, but I’m sure that if they can organise themselves well tactically - as they have done in previous games in this competition - they will give themselves a very good chance."
