David James believes that the length of time before England face a competitive game will be a huge benefit in the long term, both for the players and the new manager.

England's first World Cup Qualifier is not until September when the Three Lions face Andorra away, and the Portsmouth goalkeeper feels that the seven months in between will provide ample opportunity to focus on getting it right.

Speaking exclusively to TheFA.com, James said: "In the past when managers have taken over they usually go straight into a qualification period, and it's then all focused on the opposition. But I think over the three days for Mr Capello it was more about looking at the players he had and just seeing what was going on.

"We didn't know what the team was until ten minutes before getting on the bus. We rotated and changed a lot of the personnel within training, and as much as it gives you a little bit of apprehension perhaps it also keeps you focused.

"It was three good days. The result was what was needed - a win at Wembley and a win in the first game under the new regime - so everyone is going to leave happy.

"With us not qualifying for the finals there is a lot of disappointment, and it's important that we get back to having the confidence to win games ahead of the qualifiers.

"The way we played today was very good - they scored, and we went straight back and scored. Their 'keeper's made a number of decent saves, he played very well, and when you come off the pitch winning and their 'keeper has been one of the best players on the field then you've done everything right."
