England Head Coach Steve McClaren managed to pick out a few positives from the Three Lions' 1-0 defeat to Spain.

The home side went down to Andres Iniesta's 63rd minute strike but McClaren thought there were some plus points to take from the game.

"We don’t like to lose football matches," he said. "This was a friendly, but it was always going to be a tough game with the players we had missing, but I was pleased with certain individual performances and we’ve learnt quite a lot about the players coming in and performing as they did."

The England supremo admitted that the home side looked toothless up front.

"We’ve lost a game, and nobody likes to lose a game, but we just lacked something in the final third," he said.

"We had the opportunity to put the ball into dangerous areas, but we just lacked that final ball, that final shot, that volley, a goal like Iniesta’s. That great goal won the game."

Debutant Ben Foster and the recalled Jonathan Woodgate and Kieron Dyer were singled out for praise by McClaren.

"It’s very difficult in a friendly like this when you have to make changes and you have to look at different ways of fitting people in.

"It’s just a case of looking at the players coming and seeing whether they can cope and adapt. It’s difficult to get cohesion and we struggle with that, but I’m looking at individuals to see if people can break into the squad.

"I think Ben Foster did well, Rio was his usual, Jonothan Woodgate and Rio were very good at the back. I’m pleased with Kieron Dyer’s performance. I thought he never stopped running and trying to make things happen. I was pleased with certain aspects."
