England have met Spain 20 times at full international level. England have won eleven, drawn three and lost six of those matches. England have won only two out of the last seven, excluding penalty shootouts.
Spain won the first match 4-3 in Madrid in 1929. It was England’s first defeat against any continental team. But England got their revenge two years later at Highbury, winning 7-1. The great "Dixie" Dean was amongst the scorers.
England had a 4-1 victory against Spain in 1955, when the floodlights were switched on for the first time at a Wembley international. England beat Spain seven times in a row from 1960 to 1980, conceding just four goals in total. The Madrid friendly in 1987 was a personal triumph for Gary Lineker, who scored all four goals in England’s 4-2 win in the Bernabeu.
The two countries have met twice in the World Cup Finals – 1-0 to Spain in Rio in 1950 and a 0-0 draw in Madrid in 1982. In the European Championship Finals England won 2-1 in Naples in 1980 and then won a tense and memorable Euro 96 quarter-final on penalties at Wembley.
