Aston Villa looked certain to book a place in the Sixth Round, until young Micah Richards made a timely intervention at the death. |
Steve McClaren has named his 28-man squad for next Wednesday's friendly with Holland, with Manchester City defender Micah Richards called up for the first time.
Midfield pairing Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon have been recalled after missing the previous two games through injury, while Michael Dawson also returns for the Three Lions.
Manchester United captain Gary Neville could move to within one cap of Kenny Sansom, the most capped full-back for England, if he plays a part in Amsterdam.
Meanwhile should Micah Richards play for England he will be the youngest defender to earn a senior cap, with Rio Ferdinand currently holding that honour after appearing against Cameroon when he was 19-years-old and eight days.
Speaking about Richards, McClaren said: "I've watched him play a number of times and he's a strong, quick and athletic player who has really impressed at Man City this season.
"This match provides us with a great opportunity to have a look at him over the next few days, and he fully deserves his chance.
"Holland are always tough opponents as they have a great history and tradition, and I'm sure it will be very competitive.
"Both the staff and the players are really looking forward to playing one of the top teams in an impressive stadium."
This game will be the 17th match between Holland and England, with the record narrowly better for the Three Lions. In 16 meetings England have won five games and drawn seven, while Holland have triumphed four times.
England have played in Amsterdam on four previous occasions and they are yet to lose. In the four games thus far the Three Lions have record two victories and two draws, that last of which was secured by a Darius Vassell strike in 2002.
