England will meet Spain in their first game of 2007 at Old Trafford, Manchester on Wednesday 7 February, we can today reveal.

The International Friendly match will kick off at 8pm and will be Spain's first visit to England since February 2001 when the Three Lions ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Villa Park.

"We believe Spain will provide very attractive opposition. There are a number of Spanish players now playing in the Premiership so it will generate a lot of interest within the game and that's why we've chosen Old Trafford to host this match," said Adrian Bevington, The FA's Director of Communications.

"It is the largest stadium available to us - we had 72,000 fans attend our last game at Old Trafford against Macedonia.

He added: "With Wembley due to open in the New Year, this is another opportunity for fans in the north of England to see the team closer to home."

The February friendly will be the 21st senior encounter between the two nations since their first meeting in May 1929 when Spain were victorious 4-3 in Madrid. England, though, edge the battle with eleven victories to Spain's six.

Steve McClaren's team will take on Spain the night after our Under-21s go head to head against the same opposition at Derby County's Pride Park. That game also kicks off at 8pm.
