Steve McClaren has singled out substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips as one of the positive points to discuss from England's goalless draw against Macedonia.

The Three Lions were disappointed with their overall display at Old Trafford on Saturday and are determined to produce an improved showing against Croatia in Zagreb on Wednesday.

But it wasn't all doom in gloom in the post-match analysis as Head Coach McClaren looked at what went wrong and what went right for his team.

He was delighted, for instance, with the performance of Chelsea winger Wright-Phillips, who came off the bench in the second half, almost scored with his first run on goal and gave England a different dimension.

McClaren said: "Shaun came on and did very well and gave us the pace and penetration we'd been lacking.

"What encouraged me was that he showed great confidence when he came on. He took players on, he was unlucky on a couple of occasions. That's a great alternative and I've said before on that right-hand side we've got alternatives."

The decision for McClaren now is whether to use Wright-Phillips from the start against Croatia, perhaps by tweaking the system and using a 3-5-2 formation, or whether to continue with him as a high-impact substitute.

It's a question he won't be answering in public, of course, but he assured fans that everything will be done to improve on Saturday's display.

He said: "I'm not picking the team for Croatia now and I'm not looking at who to play and what system to play straight away.

"We'll dissect the performance and find out the reasons why didn't perform a lot better than that. We know we can. We'll find the reasons, put them right and make sure we are better on Wednesday."
