As he approaches his 50th cap for England, Frank Lampard expresses his pride at reaching the landmark. |
Frank Lampard was presented with a commemorative montage of his England career ahead of his 50th cap on Wednesday against Croatia.
The Chelsea midfielder made his debut seven years ago today in England's 2-1 win over Belgium at Sunderland's Stadium of light and has scored 12 goals.
Lampard's appearance completed the latest of three father-and-son pairings to have played for England, after the Easthams and the Cloughs.
The 28-year-old was one of four England players named in the official Euro 2004 All-Star squad by the UEFA technical study group, and fans voted in their thousands to make him the Official England Player of the Year in both 2004 and 2005.
He said: "It's a great honour to play for your country and to reach 50 caps makes me very, very proud.
"With it comes added pressure, and I will have to set a good example to the rest of the team."
Lampard is expected to take his place in the England line-up in Zagreb, but will be without his usual midfield partner, Steven Gerrard, who misses the game through suspension.
Lampard added: "It's a big loss. Any team in the world would miss a player like Gerrard. But when you talk about England, you have to look beyond any one player. You have to look at the squad as a whole."
