England Player of the Weekend

Following his faultless defensive performance and incredible goal at Old Trafford on Sunday, Rio Ferdinand is the England Player of the Weekend.

The Three Lions defender was the focal part of the Manchester United defence that never looked like conceding against their rivals Liverpool.

Paul Scholes gave United the lead shortly before half time from a fine move involving Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs on the left flank, the finish was fitting for the midfielder on his 500th appearance for the club.

In the second period inevitably Liverpool came back into the game yet Ferdinand was never ruffled and looked extremely calm as the Premiership leaders held off their North West neighbours.

Just after the hour mark Ferdinand put the game beyond the Merseyside outfit with a fantastic turn and finish into the top corner to double the home side's advantage.

Bringing down Jamie Carragher's clearance comfortably on his right foot, Ferdinand then fired the ball back across Jose Reina with unerring accuracy. After scoring the last-minute winner in front of the Stretford End the last time these teams met, it must have felt like deja vu for Ferdinand.
