Steve McClaren press conference

Steve McClaren speaks to the media the day before his first competitive game in charge of England, as they take on Andorra.

Unavailable Three Lions striking pair Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney called in for lunch with his England team-mates in Manchester this week.

Newcastle striker Owen has missed the start of Steve McClaren's reign as manager after suffering a serious knee injury at the World Cup.

He could be out for most of the season but the new England boss is keen to keep everyone involved and he visited his teammates today as they prepared for the first Euro 2008 qualifier with Andorra.

Wayne Rooney, who misses both the European qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia through suspension, also paid a visit to the team hotel earlier in the week.

Steve told TheFA.com: "Wayne and Michael are big players for us and I very much want to keep them involved. Wayne will be back soon and although Michael will take a bit longer, he's a key player for us and everyone is looking forward to seeing him."

McClaren took his team through their final training session ahead of tomorrow's game against Andorra at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand was the only player from the 23-man squad not to take part in the full session at Manchester United's Carrington training ground.

Ferdinand, ruled out of the Andorra game with a toe injury, worked on his own with the England physios. He did some light running and ball work.
