Hargreaves takes the vote
Wednesday, 09 August 2006.
Owen Hargreaves has revealed his delight after finding out that he has been voted England's player of the World Cup by you the fans.
After the World Cup we began a poll on the homepage asking who you thought was England's player of the tournament, and with more than 35,000 votes flooding in during July we got our winner.
Hargreaves took just under a quarter of the total votes, coming ahead of his Three Lions teammates Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, David Beckham and John Terry in the voting.
Hargreaves won over the fans with his dominant midfield displays against Sweden and Portugal in particular, breaking up attacks with ruthless determination and inspiring those around him with his endless running.
Speaking exclusively to TheFA.com, Owen spoke of his delight: "Any time you can have the public’s support is great. Obviously before the World Cup I got a taste of the other side of it but it’s far better to be on the positive side of it.
"I saw some English people when I was on holiday in Dubai and it was great. They came up to me and thanked me for working so hard.
"They just said thank you which is the best thing you can really say to someone.
"When people come up to you and say things like that to you, it’s fantastic. It’s all you can really ask for."
Personally Hargreaves was pleased with his performances in Germany, but looking back he can't hide his frustration that England didn't progress further.
"We had more to offer. We made it to the Quarter Finals without playing our best. Not many teams can say that.
"We expected more going in to the tournament. Personally, for me it was great to get the opportunity to play and to play well was everything I could have asked for.
"But football is not about individuals, it's about the team. When the team has success, each individual has success as well."
Hargreaves is also looking forward to seeing his England colleagues again, after forming such a close bond during their time in Baden Baden.
He said: "Normally you only see each other for a day or two and then at the World Cup you are together for six weeks. Every day you spend all day together and you really get to know people.
"So it’s different and you do miss it when suddenly you are not all together anymore. We got into a routine in Baden Baden.
"When we were not playing games, the hotel kind of became our home. Everyone enjoyed the hotel and being together, we just would have wanted more success.
"Being together in Manchester will be a bit like a mini-reunion. It will be nice to see everyone."
Hargreaves is also keen to make an impact on the beginning of the Steve McClaren era.
"Technically, he really knows his football. I enjoy working with him. He covers all the bases which is very important at this level.
"Tiny little details can decide games at international level. Those are the things that he will cover extensively and that’s important."
