We bring you the highlights from Steve McClaren's first press conference, as he introduces John Terry and Terry Venables. |
We will bring you details of Steve McClaren's first squad with Dean Ashton and Darren Bent among the strikers.
New England captain John Terry is joined in the squad by three Chelsea team-mates, Frank Lampard, Wayne Bridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Steve has selected three goalkeepers, Paul Robinson, an ever-present at the World Cup, Chris Kirkland and Manchester United's young stopper Ben foster, who is currently on loan at Watford.
Spurs are heavily represented. In addition to Robinson, World Cup squad members Aaron Lennon and Jermaine Jenas, while there are also inclusions for Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson.
With former captain David Beckham omitted from the squad, the only overseas based player called up is England's official player of the World Cup, Owen Hargreaves.
And McClaren explained: "This is the start of a new era and in picking this squad I wanted evolution not revolution.
"I want to start building a squad for the 2008 European Championship and have kept a number of experienced players who I feel can contribute.
"But I also wanted to add young players into that to give them the opportunity and I hope to get the right balance in the squad and in the team.
"This is a great set of players and I am planning to get success on the field starting from now."
McClaren also welcomed John Terry into the role as England captain and believes the Chelsea defender is the perfect man to lead the Three Lions to glory.
"Picking a new captain was always going to be a difficult decision, but I have gone with John Terry for a number of reasons," he explained.
"Number one is that he is a winner and I want England to win and win well. John leads by example, he expects to win and he expects others to win.
"He is well respected, he has got great hunger to succeed and he plays the game with a great passion which is something I want to see from this England team."
