VIDEO: Steve McClaren announcement

On the day that he was confirmed as the next England Head Coach, Steve McClaren speaks to the media

The FA would like to make clear that Chief Executive Brian Barwick personally met with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger at an earlier stage in the recruitment of Sven's successor.

At the beginning of a meeting which lasted approximately two hours, Arsene Wenger was categoric that he had no desire to become England Head Coach as he is very happy in club football.

After this was established, Brian Barwick spoke at length with Wenger - drawing from his vast knowledge and experience in the game.

An FA spokesman said: "The meeting with Arsene was extremely useful, but it was obvious within minutes that he did not want to be considered for the role of England Head Coach. However, he was extremely helpful and provided a great insight into some of the challenges facing any manager. We were very grateful for his time."
