Osgood, who also played for Southampton, earned four caps for England making his debut against Belgium in 1970, the same year that he won The FA Cup.

He was the last player to score in every round of the tournament, scoring in the Final replay against Leeds United at Old Trafford.

His fourth and final cap came in a friendly against Italy at Wembley in 1973.

Osgood lifted the European Cup Winners Cup in 1971 scoring in both the final and the replay against Real Madrid.

He later lifted The FA Cup with Southampton in 1976 when the South Coast side were victorious over Manchester United.

FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick said today: "This is very sad news. Peter Osgood made a wonderful contribution to English football, playing four times for the national side and serving clubs like Chelsea and Southampton with such great distinction. He had ten years with Chelsea and will always be a hero to Blues fans".

Former Chelsea teammate Ron Harris said: "It's a sad sad day, he was a very good friend of mine for over 30 years. He was one of the most gifted players I ever played with at Chelsea.

"He came through the youth ranks at Chelsea and was a fantastical lad and a fantastic player."

At Anfield tonight before the England v Uruguay friendly there will be a period of silence in memory of the late Ron Greenwood who was England manager from 1977 to 1982 and we would also like to pay tribute to Peter Osgood.  The players will also wear black armbands during the match.
