Nick Hancock said: "He kept five clean sheets, his performances were fantastic and I think that in his position he has progressed so much.

"One save I remember particularly well came in the Millenium Stadium against Wales when England were struggling a little.

"I was at the game and but for his brilliant stop from Hartson we could easily have lost that game as well as the match with Northern Ireland. If that had happened we might well have had to go into the play-offs."

The presenter of the sporting quiz show 'They Think It's All Over', Hancock is convinced that Robinson could be the difference when England head to Germany for the World Cup.

"We are fortunate to have a lot of great players who get all the headlines but you've got to have a good goalkeeper if you want to compete in a major tournament.

"He has taken over from David James, who was a big character, and it takes a great deal of mental strength to do that. It will be his first tournament as number one, but he proved last year that he is ready.

"He bided his time for England, we saw his meteoric rise at Leeds United but since those days he has steadly added to his game and you can have a lot of confidence in him now.

"Playing behind the England defence there are very few shots on goal and it requires incredible concentration to make the saves when they are required."
