Following news that Sven will step down as Head Coach after the World Cup, TheFA.com looks back at the highlights of his tenure.

Sven began with five consecutive victories, the first England boss to achieve such a sequence, and the Swede has now taken the team to two World Cups and one European Championship. Three tournaments, three qualifications.

What have been the highlights, the most significant matches, in Sven's five years at the helm?

Here are ten suggestions:-

England 3 Spain 0 in February 2001

Sven's reign got off to a very encouraging start with this friendly win at Villa Park. Goals by Barmby, Heskey and Ehiogu saw England home in a match that they dominated from start to finish. When Martyn saved Moreno's penalty, it all seemed too good to be true.

Germany 1 England 5 in September 2001

A night of pure joy for England fans as Germany were humbled in a crucial World Cup qualifier in Munich. After going behind in the sixth minute, England blew the home side away with an Owen hat-trick and a goal apiece from Gerrard and Heskey. It was Svensational!

England 2 Greece 2 in October 2001

After all the uncertainty England finally confirmed their place in the World Cup Finals with this last-gasp draw at the "Theatre of Dreams". England's hero of the hour was Beckham, driving the team forward and scoring the priceless equaliser with a trademark free-kick.

England 1 Argentina 0 in June 2002

A nerveless Beckham penalty a minute before half-time gave England a vital World Cup win in Sapporo. It was a sweet victory against the South Americans, their conquerors in the tournaments of 1986 and 1998 - both in controversial circumstances.

 England 2 Turkey 0 in April 2003

At Sunderland's Stadium of Light, with a new "diamond" formation that Sven had introduced specifically for this crucial Euro 2004 qualifier, England produced their finest performance since beating the Argentinians. The feel-good factor reverberated around the country for weeks.

Turkey 0 England 0 in October 2003

England would now head joyously to Portugal for Euro 2004 after a performance of towering strength in Istanbul. It had been a match full of drama, with Beckham slipping as he sent a spot-kick over the bar. Turkey had two late chances - one a marvellous save by David James - but it was destined to be England's night.

England 4 Croatia 2 in June 2004

After a 3-0 win against the Swiss in their second group match of Euro 2004, a draw with Croatia in Lisbon would be enough to make the quarter-finals. A rousing fight-back after conceding an early goal saw Rooney score twice as England's hunger and passion won the day.

Poland 1 England 2 in September 2004

England needed the points in Chorzow and they got them. Their attitude on the night was spot-on and even a Polish equaliser after Defoe's classy opener wasn't enough to stop Sven's England going on to collect their first win on the long road to Germany 2006.

England 2 Poland 1 in October 2005

Lampard sent England into the World Cup Finals on a high with a stunning volley that beat Poland at Old Trafford and put the Three Lions top of their qualifying group. Owen equalled Lineker's record for competitive goals for England but the whole team played their part in a morale-boosting victory.

England 3 Argentina 2 in November 2005

England edged a thrilling friendly against great rivals Argentina thanks to two stunning late headers from Owen in Geneva. Trailing 2-1 with three minutes to go, they won the match in one of the most dramatic finales in England's history. If this is what the World Cup is going to be like - bring it on!
