WATCH THE ACTION : England 3-2 Argentina

Re-live Wayne Rooney's equaliser during England's stunning 3-2 win over Argentina in Geneva.

Sky Sports' football pundit Chris Kamara has thrown his weight behind Wayne Rooney as TheFA.com's 'England player of the Year' award reaches its climax.

The former Bradford manager, whose enthusiastic style behind the microphone has won him cult hero status, even went as far to say Rooney could become as good a player as Maradona.

"For me it's Wayne Rooney all the way," said Kamara, who won the League Championship with Leeds.

"I think he is absolutely fantastic and a wonderful player. The best player I have ever seen play live is Maradona but I think one day Wayne could match him and have that kind of impact.

"He is a special player and so important to England."

Rooney enjoyed an exceptional 2005, culminating in a goal-scoring performance in England magnificent 3-2 win over Argentina in November.

Brighton Youth Team manager Dean Wilkins, who guided his side to a fantastic 2-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday night, is another Rooney fan.

"It's got to be Rooney for me," he insisted. "I just feel that every game he plays, his temperament and attitude is incredible.

"It's not just the attacking aspect of his game, but he will chase back and defend. When you see your team-mates doing that, it’s a massive boost.

“I’m sure the players would say the same thing about him.”
