The Chelsea and England midfielder was rewarded for a tremendous 2005 with the prestigious honour at the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

The top award, unsurprisingly, went to Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho, who polled a vast percentage of the votes. Barcelona team-mate Samuel Eto'o finished third.

Ronaldinho, who also won the European Player of the Year award last month - Lampard came second - retained the title of best player on the planet, only the second person to do so after fellow countryman Ronaldo.

However, being second to the majestic Ronaldinho is no disgrace and Lampard can take consolation from a wonderful season.

"I didn't expect this at all with so many fantastic players in world football, both in my own side and having played against them," said Lampard. "It is a real honour."

England Head Coach responded to his shortlisting by stating that Lampard was the complete player - high praise indeed.

"I can think of almost no weakness in his game," said Sven.
