Sven-Goran Eriksson Tord Grip
Charlton Athletic 0-2 Chelsea Aston Villa 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

This weekend Sven-Goran Eriksson watched Charlton Athletic v Chelsea on Saturday and Liverpool v Manchester United on Sunday, while his assistant coach Tord Grip attended Aston Villa v Tottenham.

The England Head Coach was on hand to witness Chelsea enhance their title prospects with a 2-0 win at Charlton, in a game where both sides had yet to drop a point this season.

Arjen Robben and Hernan Crespo gained most of the plaudits for their impressive strikes, though Alan Hansen was quick to point out the immense contribution made by John Terry, tipping him to one-day become England captain, while team-mate Frank Lampard also impressed.

Charlton - inspired by a dogged Danny Murphy display - acquitted themselves well in the first-half against the Premiership champions, but Chelsea stepped up a gear after the interval with Crespo heading Jose Mourinho’s side in front on 55 minutes.

However, Chelsea saved the best until last with Robben securing victory with a delightful curling effort, to move his side six points clear at the summit.

Chelsea’s hopes of winning back-to-back titles were strengthened further on Sunday when rivals Liverpool and Manchester United played out a goalless draw in front of Sven at Anfield.

Defences dominated the majority of the proceedings, with only one goal having been conceded between the two sides all season.

Kieran Richardson impressed in an unfamiliar left-back role for United, alongside the ever-reliant Rio Ferdinand, while Three Lions duo Jamie Carragher and Stephen Warnock stood strong in the Liverpool rearguard.

Reds captain Steven Gerrard was one of the closest to breaking the deadlock with a 30-yard piledriver which was superbly kept out by Edwin van der Sar after 66 minutes, while Ruud van Nistelrooy missed United’s best chance when his first-half lob sailed just over the bar.

Meanwhile at Villa Park, Tord Grip witnessed Paul Robinson put on an outstanding goalkeeping display to deny Aston Villa maximum points against Tottenham in a game that ended 1-1.

England Under-21 international James Milner marked his home debut for David O’Leary’s side with a well-taken long-distance strike early on, and Tottenham’s misery continued when three-lions striker Jermain Defoe saw a penalty saved by Thomas Sorensen.

However, it was Sorensen’s goalkeeping counterpart who was the busier of the two, denying Villa time and again to keep his side in the game, before Robbie Keane stole a late equaliser for Martin Jol’s men.
